Friendship and kinship bring together the four artists in ‘AN IRISH CONNECTION’. Ireland and Cornwall too are inextricably woven together in their lives. |

BREON O’CASEY
Breon O'Casey was drawn to St Ives in the mid 1950s, encouraged by the group of artists who had already settled there to explore a new artistic expression – moving from traditional ‘establishment’ painting to the greater freedom of more abstract experimentation. Although his current paintings are predominantly abstract, several contain strong figurative imagery, in particular birds and fish.
Since Breon’s solo show at Yew Tree Gallery in 2003, a subtle emphasis on the female figure seems to have emerged in both the paintings and sculpture. His palette remains particularly his own, veering towards earthy tones – strong ochres and umbers, and often the surprise of pink and bright red which enlivens the canvas. |

Jane O'Malley
JANE O’MALLEY came to St Ives from Canada in 1969 and married Tony O’Malley four years later. Lifelong friends, both they and Breon have exhibited over the years in Dublin, London and Cornwall. Jane’s most recent solo show was at the Taylor Galleries, Dublin, and Breon’s at the Mullan Gallery, Belfast, both in 2006.
Jane’s mixed media painting engages mainly with still life against landscape, which she interprets through pattern and flattened perspective, her stylised jugs and vases taking on a personality of their own. All her work in this exhibition is based on elements of the volcanic island of Lanzarote. A fascination with the dark lava fields, “a volcanic ‘moonscape’ of stark angular shapes” and the vivid colours of the native flowers infuses her work with the drama of contrasts. |

Jack Doherty
JACK DOHERTY comes from Northern Ireland and was active during the 1970s in designing prototypes for the Ceramics Industry at Kilkenny Design - alongside his personal work which earned him two gold medals in international ceramics exhibitions.)
Leaving Ireland in 1983, Jack moved to Herefordshire where he established his own pottery. He loves “pots which have a useful life” and, rather surprisingly, makes these in porcelain rather than stoneware or earthenware. One of his unique gifts to contemporary British pottery is his use of soda ‘glazes’; the salts being introduced to the kiln when at white hot heat. Copper and water brushed into the surface before firing gives a soft blush of pinks and greens to the surface.
Chairman of the Craft Potters Association these past 5 years, Jack also organised ‘Ceramica’, an International Festival of Ceramics in 2003. He has exhibited widely in Britain, Ireland and abroad since 1974 and is a Selector for the Crafts Council of Ireland.

Duibhne Gough
DUIBHNE GOUGH learnt the craft of jewellery making at her father Breon’s elbow. Later she was apprenticed to him, assisting with the production of his collections for exhibitions, until in 2003 she became a professional designer-jeweller herself and has subsequently exhibited in specialist craft galleries around the country. Duibhne uses rare and unusual precious and semi-precious stones combined with gold and silver in her necklaces and earrings. |
